CWG2014: The league of extraordinary Indian...

Continuing from the previous article here are the wrestlers that made the nation proud in Glasgow:

Sushil Kumar (Men’s wrestling, 75kg)

The back to back Olympic medalist(Bronze + Silver) was the hottest favourite in this category even though he had to put on roughly 10kgs from his previous 66 kg category that he competed in. He did not disappoint having lived up to the expectation of being one of India’s main contenders to bring home Gold.

Yogeshwar Dutt (Men’s wrestling, 65 kg freestyle)

The Indian wrestler who is also a holder of the coveted ‘Padma Shri’ award brought home the Gold in some style winning the final bout by technical superiority(10-0).

Amit Kumar (Men’s wrestling, 57kg)

This young grappler at the age of 20 is the next big thing in Indian wrestling. He seemed to win the finals with ease(6-2) after breezing through the initial rounds of the tournament.

Babita Kumari (Women’s wrestling, 55 kg freestyle)

The female wrestler who impressed in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Games by winning a silver medal went a step further to clinch the Gold in Glasgow. At the age of 24, she will carry India’s hopes for a medal in the upcoming Olympic games in Rio.

Vinesh Phogat (Women’s wrestling, 48kg)

If you thought Amit Kumar was young, this teenager set the wrestling world alight with her performances in Glasgow. Under the guidance of the same coach Mahavir Singh Phogat as famous female wrestlers Babita and Geeta she beat England’s Yana Rattigan 11-8 in the final bout.
